Position Description
Position: Organist/Choirmaster
Accountability: Reports to the Rector
Type: Part time–15-20 hours per week
Instruments: Organ: Rodgers Trillium 337 two-manual Hybrid, with two ranks of principal pipes, 8' and 4' purchased and maintained by Schleuter Organ and Chapel Music in 2005.
Piano:Hailun Grand Piano - purchased from PianoWorks in 2013 maintained and tuned by Cary Thrift
Salary Range: $39000-$45000/year
Summary: St. Catherine’s is a Program sized parish (asa 220) in Marietta, East Cobb County, Georgia. We strive to be open, welcoming and loving. We seek a part-time Organist/Choirmaster with a demonstrated love of music, proficiency in choral conducting, proficiency in playing organ & piano, and organizational skills in planning music programs, who would love to help us grow in faith while strengthening our rooted and strong programs.

Responsibilities:

Serve as the Director of the Chancel Choir (adult choir) and the Choristers(St. Catherine’s youth choir, serving young people ages 8-18).

Play the organ & piano for all scheduled church services that include music, and maintain first right of refusal for special services, such as weddings and funerals.

Promote strong congregational singing. Teach new hymns/music to the community, as needed. Encourage congregation members to grow in confidence as they sing hymns.

Work with the liturgy planning team to ensure that music, both hymns and anthems, reflect the diversity of the parish and the wider community.

Attend staff meetings.

Work as a member of the Program Staff (liturgy planning team) and the Concert Series Committee.

In consultation with the Rector, select music for all church services, based on the Episcopal lectionary and/or the season in general.

Recruit and train new members of the choirs of St. Catherine’s.

Work with parents of the Choristers to encourage their involvement and support of the program.

Coordinate the use of paid instrumentalists and singers from outside the parish, making effective use of the music budget.

Coordinate and schedule regular organ and piano maintenance to maintain the musical instruments.

Operate within established administrative office procedures.

Attend continuing education as approved by the Rector.

Upon the organist’s absence from any service for any reason, procure a supply organist and orient them to our worship patterns and the church office.

Perform a postlude and prelude at Sunday services.

Review, purchase and maintain music and files required to support the music program.

Take mandatory Safeguarding & Dismantling Racism training, as required by both St. Catherine’s and The Diocese of Atlanta.
