A dangerous phishing email is circulating at St. Cats!

Per our conversation earlier about the Remote Trojan email - as a security professional, I strongly recommend informing all our St. Cat’s parishioners about the danger this phishing attack poses. This phishing email provides a access point for a Remote Access Trojan (RAT) to take over an infected computer, phone or tablet. One click sends the same malicious email to every contact in the victim’s device. The email is convincing - I checked it with Malwarebytes and confirmed it is a phishing attack. I did not click the link. So far, I have received the email from 3 St Cat’s parishioners.

Message to St. Cat’s Parishioners from Tami Stewart:

A dangerous phishing email is circulating titled “Special Party Invitation from (a person you know)” with the message: 

“You’re invited! Please click on the invitation to see more and RSVP.”

Clicking the link installs a Remote Access Trojan (RAT) on your phone or computer. This gives the scammer control of your device. The type of control and how to deal with the Remote Trojan is dependent on the type of device you have. If you have clicked the link in the email I recommend that you have your device looked at to confirm that it is clean. Different models of phone/tablet(s) may require different remediation than a personal computer for instance.

When in doubt, please consider changing ALL passwords: From a different, clean device, update email and sensitive account passwords immediately.

Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Add MFA to the email and primary accounts.

Check Email Settings: Log into webmail and remove any unauthorized auto-forwarding rules or unfamiliar logged-in devices.
